CONSTITUENT REPORT

gamma-Terpinene

monoterpene hydrocarbonCAS 99-85-4

gamma-Terpinene is a common monoterpene hydrocarbon in citrus peel, thyme, oregano, cumin, and other essential oils already represented in the AromaForge archive. The strongest evidence is for identity, widespread occurrence, and antioxidant chemistry, with a smaller constituent-level preclinical literature covering antinociception and inflammatory signaling. That makes gamma-terpinene useful archive context for aroma and chemistry, but not a basis for medical claims or implied human therapeutic benefit.

Chemical identity and composition

PubChem and NIST both identify gamma-terpinene as C10H16 with InChIKey YKFLAYDHMOASIY-UHFFFAOYSA-N. In the local archive it appears repeatedly in citrus, thyme, oregano, savory, cumin, and related oils, often as a secondary or major hydrocarbon marker rather than a trace constituent.

Aroma and practical use

  • Use the recorded fresh, citrusy, terpenic, herbal, slightly spicy, citrus, herbaceous descriptors to explore a blend's scent character; perceived strength also depends on the other ingredients.
  • Review the flagged use concerns across every contributing oil and the selected dilution.
  • Read the route, preparation and experimental context before using a study finding to choose an oil.

Reported benefits and effects

Findings retain their study context. An animal or laboratory result describes that experiment.

A 2015 mouse study reported that oral gamma-terpinene at 1.562 to 50 mg/kg reduced nociceptive behavior in formalin, capsaicin, and glutamate tests without showing central depressant or muscle relaxant effects in the study's screening assays.

This is one of the clearest constituent-level animal papers for gamma-terpinene because it tested multiple nociception models and included antagonist experiments.

animalRoute not recorded

This experimental finding does not establish benefit, dose or safety in people using this blend.

A 2003 Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry paper reported that gamma-terpinene retarded linoleic-acid peroxidation through rapid cross-reaction between hydroperoxyl and linoleylperoxyl radicals, a mechanism distinct from vitamin E.

This paper is important because it provides a mechanistic explanation for why gamma-terpinene is repeatedly described as an antioxidant constituent.

in vitro chemicalRoute not recorded

This experimental finding does not establish benefit, dose or safety in people using this blend.

A 2021 Food Chemistry study found gamma-terpinene acted synergistically with model phenols and polyphenols, increasing inhibition duration during substrate autoxidation and helping regenerate antioxidant partners from their radicals.

This updates the older antioxidant story with a more specific synergy model rather than a simple radical-scavenging label.

in vitro chemicalRoute not recorded

This experimental finding does not establish benefit, dose or safety in people using this blend.

A 2025 toxicogenetic paper reported moderate toxicity in Artemia salina, reduced melanoma-cell proliferation, cell-cycle effects in Allium cepa, and a binucleated-cell increase at the highest rat dose tested, indicating gamma-terpinene is not free of dose-related safety concerns.

This is useful mainly as a caution against treating a common aroma hydrocarbon as automatically benign at concentrated exposure levels.

preclinical safetyRoute not recorded

This experimental finding does not establish benefit, dose or safety in people using this blend.

No numeric constituent-specific use limit is available here. Missing is not an unrestricted-use clearance.

A RIFM safety assessment exists for p-mentha-1,4-diene, but the directly accessible public record in this pass was limited to bibliographic and search-snippet level rather than a fully readable abstract.

The source assessment applies to its specified exposure and preparation; this entry is not an unrestricted-use clearance.

No direct public citation is attached to this entry.

The newer toxicogenetic literature suggests gamma-terpinene is not free of damaging effects at higher tested doses, so archive wording should avoid implying unrestricted safety from natural occurrence alone.

What this report cannot establish

  • A reported constituent percentage does not establish an effective human therapeutic dose or the amount absorbed into the body.
  • The presence of a constituent does not guarantee a clinical benefit, rash treatment or sleep improvement from a custom blend.
  • An unflagged concern or missing use limit does not establish safety for ingestion, inhalation, skin exposure or a particular person.
  • A candidate constituent interaction does not establish that two oils amplify one another at the selected proportions.
  • Constituent descriptors alone do not establish a precise top, heart or base lifetime in a finished blend.
Known data gaps (6)
  • This pass did not verify isolated human clinical efficacy literature for gamma-terpinene.
  • A directly readable public dermal threshold or IFRA-style concentration ceiling specific to isolated gamma-terpinene was not confirmed.
  • The strongest benefit-oriented evidence remains chemical-model or animal-model work rather than human aroma-use outcomes.
  • No constituent-specific numeric dermal reference is available here.
  • Some findings do not record an explicit exposure route; consult the linked study before applying them to a use.
  • Interaction candidates lack an attached source citation and remain unqualified.
