CONSTITUENT REPORT
Nerolidol
Nerolidol is a floral-woody sesquiterpene alcohol that can dominate cabreuva and nerolina chemotypes and appears as a secondary constituent in neroli, niaouli, Peru balsam, and pomelo-flower records across the AromaForge archive. The strongest public evidence is for identity, occurrence, and fragrance-safety review, but nerolidol also has a larger preclinical literature than many archive terpenes, including studies on inflammatory signaling, neutrophil modulation, neuroinflammation, and arthritis models. Those findings remain mostly in vitro or animal-based, so AromaForge should frame nerolidol as a well-documented aroma constituent with promising but still preclinical bioactivity signals.
Chemical identity and composition
NIST and PubChem identify nerolidol as C15H26O and note that it exists as cis/trans geometric isomers and stereoisomeric forms. In the archive it is often tracked specifically as trans-(E)-nerolidol in nerolina and cabreuva materials, but mixed-isomer registry naming is still common in safety literature and databases.
Aroma and practical use
- Use the recorded woody, floral, fresh bark-like, balsamic, green, citrus, rose-like, tea-like, fresh bark descriptors to explore a blend's scent character; perceived strength also depends on the other ingredients.
- Compare the recorded goal signals with the intended purpose, while keeping model assumptions separate from observed study outcomes.
- Review the flagged use concerns across every contributing oil and the selected dilution.
- Read the route, preparation and experimental context before using a study finding to choose an oil.
Reported benefits and effects
Findings retain their study context. An animal or laboratory result describes that experiment.
A 2016 rotenone-rat study found nerolidol increased antioxidant defenses and lowered IL-1beta, IL-6, TNF-alpha, COX-2, and iNOS in brain tissue while attenuating dopaminergic neurodegeneration markers.
In this Parkinson-like model, daily nerolidol pretreatment improved SOD, catalase, and glutathione status, reduced malondialdehyde and inflammatory mediators, and lessened glial activation and dopamine-neuron loss.
This experimental finding does not establish benefit, dose or safety in people using this blend.
A 2022 human-neutrophil paper identified nerolidol as a potential anti-inflammatory modulator that inhibited fMLF-induced neutrophil activation and chemotaxis.
The open-access study reported inhibition of agonist-induced neutrophil calcium responses and chemotaxis, with an IC50 around 4.0 microM for inhibition of fMLF-induced activation.
This experimental finding does not establish benefit, dose or safety in people using this blend.
A 2022 CFA-arthritis rat study reported reduced paw swelling and lower TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, NF-kB, PGE-2, and COX-2 expression after nerolidol treatment.
The paper also reported improved antioxidant-enzyme activity and higher IL-10 and IL-4 in treated animals, supporting anti-inflammatory activity in that model.
This experimental finding does not establish benefit, dose or safety in people using this blend.

Because the public efficacy literature is still largely preclinical, copy should avoid presenting neuroprotective, anti-arthritic, or anti-inflammatory findings as established human outcomes.

No direct public citation is attached to this entry.
Archive records for nerolidol-rich oils sometimes note penetration-enhancing behavior at the oil level, so formulation-facing language should stay cautious even when irritation-specific constituent data are limited.

downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6
Multiple animal papers and a 2022 arthritis study report lower expression of classic inflammatory cytokines after nerolidol treatment.

modulation of neutrophil calcium flux and chemotaxis
A 2022 open-access neutrophil study found nerolidol activated Ca2+ influx acutely but inhibited subsequent agonist-driven neutrophil activation and chemotaxis, supporting an immunomodulatory rather than simply suppressive profile.

oxidative-stress attenuation with lower COX-2 and iNOS signaling in preclinical neuroinflammation work
The rotenone rat model linked nerolidol with improved antioxidant-enzyme status and reduced inflammatory mediators in brain tissue.

What this report cannot establish
- A reported constituent percentage does not establish an effective human therapeutic dose or the amount absorbed into the body.
- The presence of a constituent does not guarantee a clinical benefit, rash treatment or sleep improvement from a custom blend.
- An unflagged concern or missing use limit does not establish safety for ingestion, inhalation, skin exposure or a particular person.
- A candidate constituent interaction does not establish that two oils amplify one another at the selected proportions.
- Constituent descriptors alone do not establish a precise top, heart or base lifetime in a finished blend.
Known data gaps (6)
- This pass did not verify a high-quality human clinical trial on isolated nerolidol.
- Public literature mixes trans, cis, and isomer-unspecified nerolidol naming, so constituent-specific claims should avoid overprecision when the source did not resolve isomer form.
- 2026-07-13 re-verification: located an RIFM/IFRA fragrance-use figure (2.02% average maximum REPORTED USE level in fine fragrance formulations, IFRA 2007 survey data, via thegoodscentscompany.com/data/rw1009032.html) but a 2026-07-13 audit correctly flagged this as a usage-survey statistic, not a RIFM/IFRA safety dermal limit -- no IFRA Standard restricts nerolidol and no RIFM safety assessment sets a dermal ceiling for it. Reverted dermal_limit_pct to null/unverified rather than retain the mislabeled figure.
- No constituent-specific numeric dermal reference is available here.
- Some findings do not record an explicit exposure route; consult the linked study before applying them to a use.
- Interaction candidates lack an attached source citation and remain unqualified.
