A cited maximum is a limit, not a suggested dilution. Missing restrictions do not establish safety.

No phototoxic furocoumarin restriction was identified in the public plai sources reviewed in this pass.

Contraindications & cautions

  • moderateUndiluted (neat) skin application is not advised: aromatherapists reported redness and general sensitization when plai oil was used undiluted on skin, even though it is considered non-toxic, non-sensitizing, and non-irritating when properly diluted for external use.
  • majorInternal/oral consumption of plai essential oil carries an explicit oral toxicity warning and is restricted to professional clinical aromatherapy use with prior medical consultation, not lay self-administration.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SCENT

Inside the oil

6 constituents

An oil's character comes from its natural chemical composition. Explore each constituent to understand the connections.

About this composition

This general plai record is anchored to openly readable Thailand plai composition studies. Sukatta et al. reported hydro-distilled Zingiber cassumunar/plai rhizome oil dominated by sabinene, terpinen-4-ol, gamma-terpinene, and DMPBD, while a separate Thailand regional study on Zingiber montanum showed the same sabinene- and terpinen-4-ol-led pattern with smaller alpha-terpinene and sabinene-hydrate fractions.

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY

Traditional & reported uses

These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.

  • traditionally used in Southeast Asian herbal massage for warming, soothing effect on muscles and joints
  • reported to support post-activity muscle comfort in traditional practice
  • traditionally associated with easing occasional physical tension after exertion
  • used in traditional balms and massage oils for a warm, medicinal-green aroma
  • used in aromatherapy blends intended for physical comfort and recovery

For aromatherapy and wellness use only — not medical advice. Effect statements are traditional/reported associations, not treatment claims. The Synergy Rating scores blend craft, harmony and safety, not medical efficacy. Read the safety framework.

What we're still learning · 4 data gaps

Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.

  • Odor intensity 68 normalizes cited descriptors such as earthy, cool, nutmeg-like, and peppery-ginger rather than transcribing a published 0-100 sensory score.
  • The `max_dermal_pct` value of 100 reflects the public IFRA conformity certificate for plai oil, which lists 100% maximum use through category 5A leave-on body products, rather than a Tisserand monograph page publishing a lower ceiling.
  • No public source located in this pass gave directly measured volatility-rate or tenacity-hour values for plai essential oil.
  • DMPBD ((E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)butadiene) is confirmed as a major hydro-distilled plai constituent by the cited Sukatta et al. abstract (0.95-16.16% range), but the full-text GC/MS table giving a region-specific typical value could not be retrieved in this pass (PDF fetch was rate-limited), so pct_typical uses the abstract range's midpoint rather than a table-native figure; a CAS number for DMPBD was also not verified in this pass. Total closure remains below the 0.95 target primarily because of this unresolved DMPBD precision and because the two cited studies do not together report a full 100%-summing GC/MS table for a single plai batch.
