Beta-bisabolol is a sesquiterpene alcohol found in selected wood and leaf oils, including Hiba Japanese cedarwood records in the AromaForge archive. Compared with alpha-bisabolol, the literature is much thinner but still real: recent work supports clear identity and stereospecific biosynthesis, while preclinical studies report in vitro anti-inflammatory effects and a separate mosquito-control paper describes strong larvicidal activity for the closely related epi-beta-bisabolol stereoisomer rather than beta-bisabolol itself. That makes beta-bisabolol a valid archive constituent with cautious, preclinical-only activity coverage.

Chemical identity and composition

PubChem identifies beta-bisabolol as C15H26O. In the archive's Hiba Japanese cedarwood oil record, beta-bisabolol is a minor sesquiterpene alcohol at 2.1%. A 2024 Valeriana jatamansi study also clarified the stereospecific plant biosynthesis of beta-bisabolol through a dedicated sesquiterpene synthase.

Aroma and practical use

softwoodyfloralsweet
  • Use the recorded soft, woody, floral, sweet descriptors to explore a blend's scent character; perceived strength also depends on the other ingredients.
  • Review the flagged use concerns across every contributing oil and the selected dilution.
  • Read the route, preparation and experimental context before using a study finding to choose an oil.

Reported benefits and effects

Findings retain their study context. An animal or laboratory result describes that experiment.

A cotton-gin-trash paper reported that purified beta-bisabolol reduced multiple inflammatory mediators in vitro at non-toxic concentrations.

The abstract reports dose-dependent inhibition of NO, PGE2, TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-8, with activity described as similar to alpha-bisabolol at the compared concentration.

This experimental finding does not establish benefit, dose or safety in people using this blend.

A 2024 plant-biochemistry study identified VjBisS as a beta-bisabolol synthase responsible for stereospecific biosynthesis in Valeriana jatamansi.

The paper used in vitro and in vivo enzyme assays plus mutagenesis-oriented follow-up to define catalytic specificity.

This experimental finding does not establish benefit, dose or safety in people using this blend.

Archive oil context confirms beta-bisabolol as a real but minor constituent in Hiba Japanese cedarwood oil.

The Hiba oil record cites a directly readable composition paper with beta-bisabolol at 2.1%.

Because the accessible activity literature is mostly cellular and stereochemistry can be confusing across beta-bisabolol and epi-beta-bisabolol records, benefit-facing copy should stay conservative.

What this report cannot establish

  • A reported constituent percentage does not establish an effective human therapeutic dose or the amount absorbed into the body.
  • The presence of a constituent does not guarantee a clinical benefit, rash treatment or sleep improvement from a custom blend.
  • An unflagged concern or missing use limit does not establish safety for ingestion, inhalation, skin exposure or a particular person.
  • A candidate constituent interaction does not establish that two oils amplify one another at the selected proportions.
  • Constituent descriptors alone do not establish a precise top, heart or base lifetime in a finished blend.
Known data gaps (7)
  • This pass did not verify a human clinical study of isolated beta-bisabolol.
  • The public literature is much thinner than for alpha-bisabolol, and some nearby papers instead concern epi-beta-bisabolol or mixed essential oils.
  • The CIR Safety Assessment of Bisabolol (2015 re-review) covers the INCI ingredient 'Bisabolol' under CAS numbers that are predominantly (-)-alpha-bisabolol and does not list CAS 15352-77-9; its 1% leave-on use conclusion and penetration-enhancer finding are documented for the INCI/CAS family as a whole but are not confirmed as applying specifically to the pure beta stereoisomer, so dermal_limit_pct and penetration_enhancer remain unverified for beta-bisabolol specifically rather than guessed.
  • No IFRA Standard specific to beta-bisabolol was located in this pass.
  • No constituent-specific numeric dermal reference is available here.
  • Some findings do not record an explicit exposure route; consult the linked study before applying them to a use.
  • Some findings lack a directly linked source; treat those entries as unverified research notes.
