About this composition

RE-ANCHORED (2026-07-09, sixth research pass): This record now uses the complete, open-access GC-MS peak table from Hasdemir et al. 2016 (J. Turkish Chem. Soc. Section A: Chemistry 3(3):427-438, doi:10.18596/jotcsa.54346), which reports 23 named, quantified compounds for Myrtus communis L. leaf oil from Yalova/Marmara, Turkey, hydrodistilled and analyzed by GC-MS on a ZB-WaxMS column, totalling 98.54% (of the paper's own reported 99.83% including a few sub-0.1% trace peaks omitted here for lack of a distinct constituent library entry). This is a different Turkish population/study than the original anchor (Ozek/Demirci/Baser 2000, linalool 18.6%/1,8-cineole 10.5%/myrtenyl acetate 10.8%, abstract-only), but shares the same myrtenyl-acetate/1,8-cineole/linalool-dominant chemotype family and is fully quotable and verifiable (unlike the paywalled 2000 abstract). The three headline constituents plus geraniol, methyl eugenol, and estragole (previously sourced from an IFRA certificate as trace/restricted compounds) are now updated to the Hasdemir Table 1 values, which independently corroborate the same compounds' presence in this chemotype. Prior Algerian/Iranian regional-proxy rows (alpha-pinene, alpha-terpineol, limonene, linalyl acetate) were removed and replaced with values from the same single, complete, directly-fetched primary source, eliminating the earlier cross-source mixing and unverified-row issues. Closure improved from ~0.71 to ~0.985.

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY

Traditional & reported uses

These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.

  • traditionally used in aromatherapy for calming, gentle effects distinct from the cineole chemotype
  • reported to support relaxation and ease occasional tension
  • used in perfumery for a soft, floral-herbaceous facet
  • traditionally associated with soothing blends suitable for evening use
  • used in blends intended to promote a gentle, balanced mood

For aromatherapy and wellness use only — not medical advice. Effect statements are traditional/reported associations, not treatment claims. The Synergy Rating scores blend craft, harmony and safety, not medical efficacy. Read the safety framework.

What we're still learning · 5 data gaps

Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.

  • A public full chromatogram for the exact Turkey linalool-type commercial batch (Perfumer's Apprentice / IFRA-6527) was not located; the composition anchor is now the Hasdemir et al. 2016 Yalova/Marmara Turkey study, a different Turkish Myrtus communis leaf-oil population sharing the same myrtenyl-acetate/1,8-cineole/linalool chemotype family, rather than the exact commercial batch.
  • No public source located gave a directly measured 0-100 volatility rate or tenacity range.
  • The original anchor, Ozek/Demirci/Baser 'Chemical Composition of Turkish Myrtle Oil' (J. Essential Oil Res. 12:541-544, 2000), remains paywalled beyond its three headline constituents (linalool 18.6%, 1,8-cineole 10.5%, myrtenyl acetate 10.8%) and was not merged numerically with the new anchor to avoid mixing non-equivalent batches; it is retained only as background/identity context in the gaps history below.
  • Sixth research pass (2026-07-09): a dedicated research agent successfully fetched (not just search-snippeted) the full text and supplementary Table 1 of Hasdemir B, Yasa H, Celik Onar H, Serguzel Yusufoglu AS, 'Investigation of Essential Oil Composition, Polyphenol Content, and Antioxidant Activity of Myrtus communis L. from Turkey' (JOTCSA 2016;3(3):427-438, doi:10.18596/jotcsa.54346, open access CC BY-NC-ND) via https://dergipark.org.tr/en/download/article-file/3595159 and https://dergipark.org.tr/en/download/article-file/3596887. This gave a complete 23-compound, directly-quoted, fully-verified GC-MS table (ZB-WaxMS column, Area%) for a Turkish Myrtus communis leinalool/myrtenyl-acetate/cineole-chemotype leaf oil (Yalova, Marmara region), totalling 98.54% of pct_typical in this record (99.83% including omitted sub-0.1% trace peaks lacking constituent-library entries: tricyclene, delta-3-carene, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)- and (E)-beta-ocimene, hexanol, (Z)-3-hexenol, 3-hexenyl butanoate, trans-pinocarveyl acetate). This record was re-anchored on this source, replacing four unverified Algerian/Iranian regional-proxy rows with values read directly from this one complete, open-access, fully-verifiable table. Closure rose from ~0.71 to ~0.985, exceeding the 0.95 target.
  • A distinct Italy/Turkey comparative study (tandfonline/JEOBP 2006, doi 10.1080/0972060X.2006.10643489) reporting a different Turkish linalool-chemotype sample (linalool 36.5%, linalyl acetate 16.3%, ~95.9% closure across 39 compounds) was identified via search but could not be fetched (paywalled; only a Scribd mirror link was found and not yet successfully retrieved). This is noted as a candidate cross-check/alternative anchor for a future pass but was not used here since the current Hasdemir-based anchor already exceeds the closure target with fully verified data.
