THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SCENT
Inside the oil
An oil's character comes from its natural chemical composition. Explore each constituent to understand the connections.
About this composition
This profile is anchored to a 2020 Albanian GC/FID study averaging Thymus serpyllum essential oil samples collected in south-east Albania in July 2017. The reviewed Albanian serpolet oil is a mixed phenolic chemotype led by para-cymene, carvacrol, thymol, linalool, and beta-caryophyllene. Additional minor constituents (monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes) were added from the same study's Table 1 Thymus serpyllium column to raise compositional closure toward the paper's reported 93.11% total.

What we're still learning · 3 data gaps
Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.
- The `max_dermal_pct` value is applied from a public safety reference for thyme oils high in thymol and/or carvacrol rather than from a serpolet-specific leave-on monograph.
- The `odor_intensity` value is an archive normalization from qualitative odor language such as 'fresh sharp terpene woody herbal' and supplier descriptors rather than a source-native 0-100 sensory metric.
- No public source reviewed in this pass published directly measured tenacity-hour or volatility-rate values for this Albanian serpolet oil.
