THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SCENT
Inside the oil
An oil's character comes from its natural chemical composition. Explore each constituent to understand the connections.
About this composition
The reviewed Brazil copaiba balsam profile is sesquiterpene-dominant, led by beta-caryophyllene with supporting alpha-trans-bergamotene, alpha-humulene, germacrene D, beta-bisabolene, alpha-copaene, delta-cadinene, germacrene B, and a tail of minor sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and alcohols directly transcribed from the same PhytoChemia GC/MS peak table (BP5 column). Because this is an oleoresin/balsam rather than a distilled essential oil, the PhytoChemia report itself states only 68.75% total identified on the BP5 column (47.78% on WAX); a large diterpenic-acid fraction is present (Plant Therapy's own Key Constituents summary states 'COPAIBA DITERPENES 25.9%') but Robert Tisserand's accompanying comment confirms these diterpenic acids (e.g. kaurenoic acid, hydroxycopalic acid) are not individually resolved in the GC/MS area table, only tentatively flagged with '?' on several unidentified late-eluting peaks that likely overlap with the 25.9% summary figure. To avoid double-counting an unresolved, only-partially-overlapping aggregate against individually tentative peaks, this record includes the clean, non-coeluted named sesquiterpene/sesquiterpene-alcohol peaks plus the diterpenes as a single aggregate row; full closure to >=0.95 is not achievable from public data without inventing individual diterpene percentages.

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY
Traditional & reported uses
These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.
- traditionally used in South American folk practice for soothing skin and topical comfort
- used in aromatherapy for a soft, woody-balsamic, calming background note
- reported to support easing of occasional tension when blended in massage oils
- used in perfumery as a subtle fixative with a mild, peppery-woody facet
- traditionally associated with grounding, comforting massage blend folklore
For aromatherapy and wellness use only — not medical advice. Effect statements are traditional/reported associations, not treatment claims. The Synergy Rating scores blend craft, harmony and safety, not medical efficacy. Read the safety framework.
What we're still learning · 3 data gaps
Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.
- The reviewed public analysis notes important copaiba diterpenes (kaurenoic acid, hydroxycopalic acid, and other diterpenic acids/esters) but does not fully resolve them into individually named, non-overlapping percentage rows; several late-eluting peaks (methyl copalate?, methyl hardwickiate?, 3-alpha-hydroxy-manool?, and multiple 'Copaiba diterpene' acid? peaks totalling roughly 25 percent of the BP5 area) are tentative IDs that plausibly overlap with the Plant Therapy Key Constituents summary's single 'COPAIBA DITERPENES 25.9%' figure, so only the latter aggregate is included here to avoid double-counting. As a result closure remains below the 0.95 target and is capped by what the source report itself resolves (68.75% total identified on the BP5 column).
- Odor intensity 20 is an archive normalization from the NHR description 'very little intense' rather than a published 0-100 measurement.
- No public source reviewed in this pass published direct volatility-rate or tenacity-hour values for copaiba balsam Brazil.
