About this composition
This record is anchored to Nature's Gift's directly readable Nepal spikenard COA (batch NE-48498), which publishes a full 49-row Identification Results table summing to 92.95%. The five strongest named peaks (guaia-6,9-diene, beta-gurjunene/calarene, delta-patchoulene, valerenal, gamma-patchoulene) anchor the record; this pass adds 17 further named rows from the same COA table. The COA also lists roughly 18.8% of unnamed/unidentified peaks (RI/mass data only, no compound name) that cannot be entered as named constituents without fabricating an identity, which caps achievable named-constituent closure below the COA's raw 92.95% total. AromaWeb and The Good Scents Company were used only for identity, odor, and general safety context.

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY
Traditional & reported uses
These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.
- traditionally used in meditation and spiritual practice for grounding and centering
- reported to support restful sleep and deep relaxation in evening blends
- traditionally associated with easing occasional tension and supporting emotional calm
- used in perfumery as an earthy, animalic-woody base note
- used in skin-care blends for a soothing, traditional reputation
For aromatherapy and wellness use only — not medical advice. Effect statements are traditional/reported associations, not treatment claims. The Synergy Rating scores blend craft, harmony and safety, not medical efficacy. Read the safety framework.
What we're still learning · 5 data gaps
Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.
- max_dermal_pct 100 is an archive normalization of publicly stated unrestricted safety guidance rather than a source-published numeric leave-on maximum: AromaWeb reports no special precautions and the reviewed IFRA certificate lists skin-contact categories as 'Not restricted.'
- Odor intensity 50 is an archive normalization of AromaWeb's qualitative 'medium' strength wording rather than a source-published native 0-100 value.
- The public Nepal COA includes additional unidentified peaks and several low-abundance named constituents, but no directly readable second public lot was located to support min-max composition ranges for spikenard in this pass.
- Named-constituent closure remains below 0.90 (approx. 0.556 after this pass) because roughly 18.8% of the COA's peak area is reported only as unidentified RI/mass-spec peaks with no compound name (11 distinct 'unknown' RI/MS peaks totaling ~18.79%), and several additional named low-abundance peaks in the COA (e.g., Pacifigorgia-1(6),10-diene, Nardosina-7,9,11-triene, Furopelargone A, beta-Chamigrene, alpha-Amorphene, Aristola-1(10),8-diene, Aristolene, cis-beta-Elemene, delta-Selinene, 7-epi-alpha-Selinene, Eudesma-4(15),7-dien-1beta-ol) were not added in this pass because a confident CAS/corpus identity could not be established without risking a mismatched or invented compound record. This pass added beta-Patchoulene (1.96%, CAS 514-51-2, confirmed via archive constituent corpus) and (E)-beta-Ionone (0.50%, CAS 79-77-6, well-established public CAS). Reaching >=0.95 closure is not achievable from this single public COA without inventing identities for the unnamed peaks.
- Follow-up research pass (2026-07-09): re-fetched the same anchoring Nature's Gift COA (spikenard-2012-NE-48498.pdf) directly and transcribed its full Identification Results table cleanly. Added 11 previously-omitted named peaks whose identities were legible in the table but were skipped in the prior pass out of caution: Pacifigorgia-1(6),10-diene (2.95%), Aristolene (1.04%), Aristola-1(10),8-diene (1.54%), Nardosina-7,9,11-triene (2.05%), cis-beta-Elemene (0.51%), beta-Chamigrene (0.41%), alpha-Amorphene (0.37%), delta-Selinene (0.51%), 7-epi-alpha-Selinene (2.11%), Furopelargone A (0.26%), and Eudesma-4(15),7-dien-1beta-ol (3.34%). CAS numbers for the more obscure sesquiterpenes (Pacifigorgia-diene, Aristolene, Aristola-diene, Nardosina-triene, delta-Selinene, Furopelargone A, Eudesma-dien-ol) could not be verified from an open registry in this pass and remain null; cis-beta-Elemene, beta-Chamigrene, and alpha-Amorphene CAS were filled from well-established public chemical registry values. Combined closure is now ~0.707. The remaining gap to 0.95 is the COA's 11 explicitly 'unknown' RI/mass-spec peaks (~18.79% combined) which have no compound name in the source and cannot be entered without fabricating an identity.
