About this composition
This record is anchored to a directly readable Valeriana officinalis roots study spanning retail and cultivated European material. That paper reports a bornyl acetate and valerenal-forward valerian root oil with broad chemotypic variation, while still repeatedly identifying bornyl acetate, valerianol, valeranone, valerenal, and myrtenyl acetate as major named markers. The constituent set has since been expanded using the same Estonian GC/MS study (Raal et al. 2007) to also capture monoterpene hydrocarbons (e.g., alpha-pinene, camphene, alpha-fenchene, limonene), monoterpene and sesquiterpene esters (e.g., bornyl isovalerate, linalyl isovalerate, myrtenyl isovalerate, kessyl and valerenyl acetates), and additional named sesquiterpene markers (e.g., alloaromadendrene, spathulenol, zingiberene, valerenic acid), bringing quantified composition closure into the 95-105% target band. Public supplier references reviewed on 2026-07-07 align on steam-distilled root/rhizome oil with a green, balsamic, musky, woody odor profile.

What we're still learning · 3 data gaps
Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.
- No directly published 0-100 odor score was located; odor_intensity 85 is an archive normalization of the reviewed supplier descriptions for valerian root oil as musky, woody, balsamic, green, and characteristically strong.
- No directly published volatility-rate or tenacity-hour figures were verified from the public sources reviewed in this pass.
- The quantified constituent subset now sums to 95.10% (up from an initial 46.65% based on five marker ranges), achieving closure within the target 95-105% band by adding 56 additional constituent ranges drawn from the same Estonian GC/MS study (Raal et al. 2007, Table 1); pct_typical values for the added rows are midpoints of each cited min-max range because the source does not publish distinct typical values, and a handful of trace or CAS-ambiguous compounds (e.g., tricyclene, alpha-thujene, 3-methylvaleric acid, beta-phellandrene, isoamyl isovalerate, cis-carveyl acetate, aromadendrene) were deliberately excluded as too uncertain to add responsibly.
