THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SCENT
Inside the oil
An oil's character comes from its natural chemical composition. Explore each constituent to understand the connections.
About this composition
This profile is anchored to a directly readable peer-reviewed blue tansy GC-MS/GC-FID study and a public technical data sheet. Across those public sources, blue tansy remains sabinene-camphor-myrcene-led, with the oil's blue color tied to chamazulene formed during distillation. This pass adds the remaining named, quantified SE52-column compounds from the same directly read Stappen et al. (2021) GC-MS/GC-FID Table 1 (monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and azulene-related constituents) to raise closure toward the archive target.

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY
Traditional & reported uses
These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.
- traditionally used in aromatherapy for its calming, soothing reputation
- reported to support comfort after physical overexertion in massage blends
- used in skin-care blends for its traditional association with calming the complexion
- valued in perfumery and blending for its deep blue color and herbaceous-sweet facet
- traditionally associated with easing occasional seasonal discomfort
For aromatherapy and wellness use only — not medical advice. Effect statements are traditional/reported associations, not treatment claims. The Synergy Rating scores blend craft, harmony and safety, not medical efficacy. Read the safety framework.
What we're still learning · 3 data gaps
Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.
- No directly measured public volatility-rate or tenacity-hour data were verified in this pass.
- The public max-dermal figure used here comes from a secondary safety summary rather than a directly readable primary Tisserand and Young page.
- Closure was raised using the full set of named, percentage-quantified SE52-column rows from the same Stappen et al. 2021 Table 1; a small residual gap remains from trace ('tr.') rows without numeric percentages and compounds reported only on the separate CW20M polar column.
