About this composition
Trade naming on Liberty Natural identifies Cypress Round Redistilled India as Cyperus rotundus, not Cupressus cypress. This record is anchored to the full Table 1 (KwaDlangezwa / Sample B column) of the directly read South Africa GC-MS paper (Lawal et al., Molecules 2009, 14, 2909), which reported 43 identified compounds accounting for 92.0% of that sample's oil; nearly all of that sample's named, quantified peaks (down to 0.1%) have now been transcribed here, giving a pinene- and alpha-cyperone-rich chemotype. The Perfumer & Flavorist review additionally documents Indian/Asian Cyperus rotundus oils as oxygenated-sesquiterpene-rich materials centered on alpha-cyperone and cyperene, consistent with the trade name. A sixth research pass (2026-07-09) added five more named constituents (myrcene, oplopenone, eudesma-2,4,11-triene, caryophylla-3,8(13)-dien-5-alpha-ol from the same paper's Sample A/Empangeni column, plus gamma-muurolene from an independent Chinese Cyperus rotundus study), raising closure from ~0.93 to ~1.04.

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY
Traditional & reported uses
These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.
- shares the traditional grounding, earthy reputation of cyperus (nagarmotha) root oils
- used in perfumery as a woody-earthy fixative note in oriental and chypre accords
- traditionally associated with calming, meditative aromatherapy blends
- reported to be used in traditional Ayurvedic-inspired perfumery for skin and hair care fragrancing
- used in blends for a smoky, mossy base facet
For aromatherapy and wellness use only — not medical advice. Effect statements are traditional/reported associations, not treatment claims. The Synergy Rating scores blend craft, harmony and safety, not medical efficacy. Read the safety framework.
What we're still learning · 4 data gaps
Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.
- Tenacity window and oxidation risk were not verified from the consulted public sources.
- Odor intensity 50 is a normalization of Perflavory odor strength 'medium' rather than a native 0-100 measurement.
- Named-constituent closure is now approximately 0.93 (42 constituents), transcribing essentially the full KwaDlangezwa/Sample B column of Table 1 in the cited South Africa paper (total identified for that sample was reported as 92.0% by the authors; a small excess above 92% here reflects per-compound rounding to one decimal in the source table). A handful of trace-level ("t", <=0.05%) and unidentified (1.1%) peaks from that sample were not assigned specific compound rows because the paper does not name them, so 0.95 closure is not reachable from this single-sample source without fabricating identities for trace/unidentified peaks.
- Sixth research pass (2026-07-09): a dedicated research agent re-examined the same Lawal et al. 2009 Molecules paper's Table 1 Sample A (Empangeni) column -- a distinct GC-MS sample/location within the same paper, separate from the Sample B (KwaDlangezwa) column already fully transcribed here -- and added four non-duplicate named compounds: myrcene (0.5%), oplopenone (3.4%), eudesma-2,4,11-triene (2.1%), and caryophylla-3,8(13)-dien-5-alpha-ol (2.1%, the distinct 5-alpha stereoisomer of the 5-beta-ol already present). It also added gamma-muurolene (3.13%) from an independent Chinese Cyperus rotundus rhizome oil study (Hu QP et al., Sci. Rep. 2017, 7:45231). Together these raised closure from ~0.93 to ~1.04. CAS numbers for eudesma-2,4,11-triene and caryophylla-3,8(13)-dien-5-alpha-ol could not be independently cross-checked via PubChem in this pass (API fetch returned no data) and are left null rather than guessed.
