Verbenone is a bicyclic monoterpene ketone best known in aromatics as the defining marker of rosemary verbenone chemotypes and in chemical ecology as a bark-beetle anti-aggregation pheromone. Among the three constituents in this batch, it has the strongest modern evidence base: identity is well established, there is a recent constituent-level anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive paper in mice and cell systems, and current fragrance or food-safety evaluations are publicly traceable. That still does not justify medical claims, but it does support a more substantial chemistry and preclinical profile than many minor oil constituents receive.

Chemical identity and composition

PubChem and food-flavor references identify verbenone as C10H14O. The archive already contains multiple rosemary verbenone oil records where verbenone functions as a chemotype-defining constituent, typically alongside camphor, alpha-pinene, and bornyl acetate. Beyond essential oils, the literature also treats verbenone as a semiochemical with anti-aggregation effects in bark beetles.

Aroma and practical use

  • Use the recorded fresh, camphoraceous, minty, herbal, pine-like, herbaceous descriptors to explore a blend's scent character; perceived strength also depends on the other ingredients.
  • Read the route, preparation and experimental context before using a study finding to choose an oil.

Reported benefits and effects

Findings retain their study context. An animal or laboratory result describes that experiment.

A 2022 Molecules study reported that isolated (1S)-(-)-verbenone reduced TPA-induced mouse ear edema, showed dose-dependent effects in chronic inflammatory and pain models, and had its phase-2 formalin antinociception reversed by L-NAME.

A 2013 long-term lodgepole-pine study concluded that verbenone reduced infestation under some moderate or gradually building outbreak conditions but was ineffective when beetle populations increased rapidly.

What this report cannot establish

  • A reported constituent percentage does not establish an effective human therapeutic dose or the amount absorbed into the body.
  • The presence of a constituent does not guarantee a clinical benefit, rash treatment or sleep improvement from a custom blend.
  • An unflagged concern or missing use limit does not establish safety for ingestion, inhalation, skin exposure or a particular person.
  • A candidate constituent interaction does not establish that two oils amplify one another at the selected proportions.
  • Constituent descriptors alone do not establish a precise top, heart or base lifetime in a finished blend.
Known data gaps (5)
  • The strongest constituent-level wellness literature for verbenone is still preclinical rather than clinical.
  • Much of verbenone's literature is ecological or agricultural rather than human-use focused.
  • The safety trail is stronger for flavor and fragrance exposure than for concentrated therapeutic-style use.
  • The numeric dermal reference lacks source provenance; a verified flag alone is insufficient.
  • Some findings do not record an explicit exposure route; consult the linked study before applying them to a use.
