THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SCENT

Inside the oil

31 constituents

An oil's character comes from its natural chemical composition. Explore each constituent to understand the connections.

About this composition

This false cypress record uses the classic 1981 Hinoki leaf oil composition published via The Good Scents Company's transcribed typical GC analysis. The leaf-twig oil is markedly different from the wood oil, led by elemol, alpha-terpinyl acetate, eudesmol isomers, bornyl acetate, and muurolene/cadrene sesquiterpenes rather than the cadinol-rich wood profile.

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY

Traditional & reported uses

These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.

  • traditionally used in aromatherapy for calming, grounding, forest-inspired relaxation blends
  • reported to support stress relief and restful mood
  • used in perfumery for its soft, woody, slightly floral-green facet
  • traditionally associated with supporting clear, easy breathing
  • used in massage blends for a soothing, warming sensory profile
  • reported to support restful sleep when diffused in the evening

For aromatherapy and wellness use only — not medical advice. Effect statements are traditional/reported associations, not treatment claims. The Synergy Rating scores blend craft, harmony and safety, not medical efficacy. Read the safety framework.

What we're still learning · 4 data gaps

Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.

  • Missing public source type: a directly viewable chemistry reference confirming CAS numbers for gamma-muurolene, beta-cadrene, and alpha-muurolene; those CAS fields remain null rather than guessed.
  • Odor intensity 55 is an archive normalization from The Good Scents Company leaf-oil odor type and description rather than a native published 0-100 measurement.
  • The 6.0 max_dermal_pct is sourced from The Good Scents Company IFRA usage recommendation for hinoki leaf oil in fragrance concentrate, not from a separate aromatherapy leave-on monograph.
  • No public source with directly measured volatility-rate or tenacity-hour values was verified in this pass.
