THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SCENT
Inside the oil
An oil's character comes from its natural chemical composition. Explore each constituent to understand the connections.
About this composition
This hinoki wood profile uses the classic 1981 wood-oil composition transcribed by The Good Scents Company and cross-checks it against a current public hinoki wood entry that identifies the material as wood-derived oil with a woody, cedar-like, sweet aroma. The wood oil is sesquiterpene-dominant and markedly richer in cadinol, muurolol, and cadinene markers than the leaf oil. The full 37-peak Good Scents typical G.C. analysis table (Shieh, Lizuka & Matsubara, Agric. Biol. Chem. (Japan), 45, 1497-1499, 1981) was used to add the remaining named, quantified peaks and raise mass-balance closure.

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY
Traditional & reported uses
These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.
- traditionally used in aromatherapy for grounding, meditative, forest-bathing-style blends
- reported to support restful sleep and stress relief
- used in perfumery for its rich, woody, slightly leathery base-note facet
- traditionally associated with easing occasional mental fatigue
- used in massage blends for a warming, grounding sensory experience
- shares the traditional insect-deterrent household use of other Chamaecyparis wood oils

What we're still learning · 4 data gaps
Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.
- Missing public source type: a directly viewable chemistry reference confirming CAS numbers for tau-muurolol, gamma-cadinene, tau-cadinol, cadin-1(10)-en-4beta-ol, alpha-muurolene, and beta-caryophyllene alcohol; those CAS fields remain null rather than guessed.
- Odor intensity 50 is an archive normalization from The Good Scents Company and AromaWeb qualitative odor descriptions rather than a native published 0-100 measurement.
- The 5.0 max_dermal_pct is sourced from The Good Scents Company IFRA usage recommendation for Chamaecyparis obtusa wood oil in fragrance concentrate, not from a separate aromatherapy leave-on monograph.
- No public source with directly measured volatility-rate or tenacity-hour values was verified in this pass.
