About this composition
This profile uses Aromatics International's public batch-history endpoint for gingergrass essential oil, which exposes four directly readable GC/MS batches for the same product line. The resulting profile is more camphene- and acetate-forward than classic palmarosa, illustrating why gingergrass should not be collapsed into palmarosa despite the close botanical relationship. The constituent list was expanded from the original 5 major peaks to nearly all named peaks reported across the 4 batches (aldehydes, esters, ethers, ketones, monoterpenes, monoterpenols, oxides, sesquiterpenes, and sesquiterpenols), raising mass-closure from roughly 47% to roughly 96% of the profile across two passes. pct_min/pct_max reflect the lowest and highest reported value for each named peak across the 4 batches (values under the detection/reporting threshold in a given batch are treated as not reported rather than zero), and pct_typical is the arithmetic mean of the batches in which the peak was reported. A small number of named peaks differ in exact label between batches 1-3 and batch 4 (for example "(E)-nerolidol" vs. "nerolidol", and "1,10-epi-cubenol" vs. "epi-cubenol"); these were treated as the same underlying constituent and merged for closure purposes given the closely matching retention behavior and values, consistent with ordinary batch-to-batch GC/MS peak-labeling variation. A second research pass re-fetched the same Aromatics International batch-history endpoint and added 13 further named peaks that had been left out of the first pass because they lacked a matching constituent record in the archive at the time (terpinen-4-ol, nerol, gamma-muurolene, (Z,E)-farnesol, (Z)-beta-ocimene, (E)-beta-ocimene, isoborneol, p-cymen-8-ol, (E)-carveol, alpha-ylangene, cyclosativene, longicyclene, and bornyl formate). For the peaks without a pre-existing archive file, CAS numbers were independently verified via NIST WebBook, CAS Common Chemistry, and standard commercial chemical-supplier listings (Sigma-Aldrich, ChemicalBook, Good Scents Company) before being added.

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY
Traditional & reported uses
These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.
- shares the traditional uplifting, refreshing reputation of other Cymbopogon (lemongrass-family) oils
- reported to support a sense of vitality and mental clarity when diffused
- used in massage blends for muscle comfort
- traditionally associated with skin-toning folk uses in South Asian traditions
- used in perfumery as a rose-geranium-like modifier due to its geranyl acetate content
For aromatherapy and wellness use only — not medical advice. Effect statements are traditional/reported associations, not treatment claims. The Synergy Rating scores blend craft, harmony and safety, not medical efficacy. Read the safety framework.
What we're still learning · 5 data gaps
Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.
- The numeric odor intensity is an archive normalization from EO Calc's published Strength: Moderate / descriptive profile rather than a native 0-100 instrumental metric.
- Missing public source type: a directly viewable primary safety monograph or IFRA/Tisserand page for gingergrass itself; the public 6.5% dermal maximum located this pass comes from supplier safety transcription rather than a primary standards page.
- No public source located in this pass gave directly measured volatility-rate or tenacity-hour values for gingergrass essential oil.
- Mass closure is roughly 96% rather than 100% because a small residual set of very minor named peaks (each under about 0.3% and reported in only one of the four batches) still lack a verifiable CAS identity or a corresponding constituent record, notably (Z)-pinocarvyl acetate (the (Z)/cis stereoisomer's exact CAS number could not be independently confirmed from public sources in this pass, only the (E)/trans isomer at CAS 1686-15-3) and (Z)-muurola-4(14),5-diene.
- A second research pass re-fetched the Aromatics International batch-history endpoint and added 13 further named peaks (terpinen-4-ol, nerol, gamma-muurolene, (Z,E)-farnesol, (Z)-beta-ocimene, (E)-beta-ocimene, isoborneol, p-cymen-8-ol, (E)-carveol, alpha-ylangene, cyclosativene, longicyclene, bornyl formate), raising closure from roughly 92.5% to roughly 96.0%. A second independent published GC/MS source (peer-reviewed paper or separate supplier CoA) for Cymbopogon martinii var. sofia was still not incorporated; all closure work to date comes from the Aromatics International four-batch dataset.
