THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SCENT
Inside the oil
An oil's character comes from its natural chemical composition. Explore each constituent to understand the connections.
About this composition
This record is anchored to the live Hermitage product page for the botanical identity and odor profile, and to The Good Scents Company's public transcription of a Journal of Essential Oil Research GC analysis for Callitris glaucophylla wood oil. The public chromatogram shows an unusual white-cypress wood profile rich in citronellic acid, beta-eudesmol, guaiol, geranic acid, and cadalene rather than the guaiol-eudesmol balance seen in blue cypress. Additional constituents (bulnesol, callitrin, callitrisin, columellarin, guaioxide, methyl citronellate, beta-selinene, alpha-selinene, elemol, 10-epi-gamma-eudesmol, gamma-eudesmol) were added from the same TGSC GC transcription to raise compositional closure toward the full published table (~89.6% of 31 named peaks). Several minor named peaks in the source table (beta-costol, gamma-costol, alpha-costol, dihydrocallitrisin, elemanolide, eudesma-1,4(15),11-triene, eudesmanolide isomer, germacranolide, iso-khusenic acid isomer 1, methyl (E)- and (Z)-isocosticate, (E,E)-methyl dihydrogeranate) were not added as rows because no verifiable CAS registry number could be located for them in this pass.

These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.
- shares the traditional grounding, meditative reputation of other Callitris/cypress-family woods
- reported to be used in blends for supporting restful sleep and calm
- used in perfumery for its dry, woody, slightly balsamic facet
- traditionally associated with easing occasional mental fatigue in diffuser blends

What we're still learning · 4 data gaps
Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.
- max_dermal_pct 100 follows the repository's unrestricted-oil convention because the live Tisserand-and-Young dilution table lists Cypress (jade) Callitris glaucophylla as 'None known' rather than publishing a numeric ceiling.
- No public source reviewed in this pass provided a primary CAS confirmation for dihydrocolumellarin.
- Odor intensity 88 is an archive normalization from Hermitage's live 'impressive tenacity, lasting 5 days on the strip' description and The Good Scents woody-lactonic-balsamic-resinous-dry odor profile rather than a native published 0-100 measurement.
- Twelve minor named peaks from the TGSC GC transcription (beta-costol, gamma-costol, alpha-costol, dihydrocallitrisin, elemanolide, eudesma-1,4(15),11-triene, eudesmanolide isomer, germacranolide, iso-khusenic acid isomer 1, methyl (E)-isocosticate, methyl (Z)-isocosticate, (E,E)-methyl dihydrogeranate), together approximately 8.6% of the oil, were not added as constituent rows because no verifiable CAS registry number could be located for them in this pass.
