A cited maximum is a limit, not a suggested dilution. Missing restrictions do not establish safety.

No phototoxic restriction was identified in the reviewed public sources for molecular-distilled patchouli. A product-specific public IFRA certificate for the double-distilled lot was not located in this pass, so the unrestricted dermal cap remains provisional.

Contraindications & cautions

  • minorPatchouli oil is generally well tolerated dermally with no major population-specific contraindications identified in the reviewed sources (it is not on Tisserand and Young's list of pregnancy-restricted oils), but public formulator guidance notes an oxidation caution: aged or oxidized patchouli oil carries increased dermal sensitization risk, so proper sealed, cool storage is advised and a supplier-specific IFRA certificate should be checked before assuming the full unrestricted dermal cap applies.

About this composition

This profile is anchored to a public technical data sheet for molecular-distilled patchouli oil and an Eden Botanicals COA for Patchouli - Double Distilled sourced from Indonesia. The double-distilled profile remains sesquiterpene-rich while emphasizing a cleaner, more refined patchouli heart after the second distillation. The primary TDS lists only five 'Main Components by GLC' (patchoulol, alpha-bulnesene, alpha-guaiene, beta-caryophyllene, beta-patchoulene) and was not a full closure-to-100% GC/MS report; a same-species (Pogostemon cablin) GC/MS report for a differently labeled 'Dark' lot was used as corroborating reference data to add seychellene, alpha-patchoulene, pogostol, alpha-humulene, caryophyllene oxide, beta-elemene, and spathulenol, all recurring patchouli sesquiterpene markers, while flagging that these percentages are cross-lot corroboration rather than the exact double-distilled batch's own GC/MS values.

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY

Traditional & reported uses

These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.

  • traditionally used in aromatherapy for grounding, calming effect
  • reported to support relaxation and easing of occasional stress
  • used in perfumery as a cleaner, lighter-bodied earthy base note and fixative
  • traditionally associated with promoting emotional balance
  • valued for a smoother, less pungent profile than crude patchouli distillate

For aromatherapy and wellness use only — not medical advice. Effect statements are traditional/reported associations, not treatment claims. The Synergy Rating scores blend craft, harmony and safety, not medical efficacy. Read the safety framework.

What we're still learning · 3 data gaps

Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.

  • A product-specific public IFRA certificate or equivalent leave-on safety source for Patchouli - Double Distilled was not located; max_dermal_pct 100 is provisional rather than directly transcribed from an exact double-distilled safety document.
  • The 0-100 odor_intensity value is a normalization of public qualitative descriptions such as 'deep', 'very tenacious', and 'exceptionally smooth' rather than a source-native numeric measurement.
  • No public full-closure GC/MS report specific to Eden Botanicals' Patchouli - Double Distilled lot was located in this pass; seychellene, alpha-patchoulene, pogostol, alpha-humulene, caryophyllene oxide, beta-elemene, and spathulenol were added from a same-species (Pogostemon cablin) 'Dark' lot GC/MS report as corroborating reference data rather than exact double-distilled batch values, so total closure (~83%) is a conservative estimate rather than a source-native 100% GC/MS total.
