About this composition

No directly readable Kenya-specific public GC-MS or COA was located for the Hermitage Kenyan oil after repeated targeted searches (including for Champagnat et al. 2006 commercial-origin comparison and other multi-country GC-MS surveys). To avoid fabricating numbers, this record combines two published quantitative sources for the same generic khusimol/vetivone-type Vetiveria zizanioides chemotype as transparent proxies: (1) the Madagascar row of the 2025 APRC commercial-vetiver review (7 main named compounds) and (2) the detailed Haitian vetiver compound table (Weyerstahl et al., Flavour Fragr. J. 2000, 15(6), 395-411, supplemented by a Plant Therapy Haiti GC-FID batch report), which together cover essentially the full public named-compound set for this chemotype class. The exact Hermitage Kenya page supplies identity and sensory direction: soft smoked, resinous, woody base notes with dark green middle notes. A sixth research pass (2026-07-09) added two South Indian minor constituents (beta-calacorene, 1-epi-cubenol) from Mallavarapu et al. 2012 and one additional constituent (hydroxyvalencene) from a GC-MS study cited within a 2025 Plants review, raising closure from ~0.92 to ~0.99.

Vetiver, Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash: Biotechnology, Biorefineries, and the Production of Volatile Phytochemicals

Barcellos-Silva IGC et al., Plants 2025, 14, 1435, doi:10.3390/plants14101435, Section 3.3.1, citing ref [114] (a GC-MS characterization study quoted within this review): 'The primary constituents were determined to be khusimol (19.57%), E-isovalencenol (13.24%), alpha-vetivone (5.25%), beta-vetivone (4.87%), and hydroxyvalencene (4.64%)'; https://www.aromaticplant.org/uploads/pdfs/V.%20zizanioides%205-10-25.pdf; used here as an additional Vetiveria zizanioides chemotype proxy value since hydroxyvalencene is not present in the Madagascar/Haiti/South-India sources already anchoring this record and no Kenya-specific source exists

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY

Traditional & reported uses

These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.

  • traditionally used in aromatherapy for grounding, calming effect
  • reported to support restful sleep and evening relaxation
  • used in perfumery as an earthy-woody base note and fixative
  • traditionally associated with easing occasional stress and nervous tension
  • reported to support a centered, stable feeling in massage blends

For aromatherapy and wellness use only — not medical advice. Effect statements are traditional/reported associations, not treatment claims. The Synergy Rating scores blend craft, harmony and safety, not medical efficacy. Read the safety framework.

What we're still learning · 6 data gaps

Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.

  • Missing source type: directly readable Kenya-specific public GC-MS or supplier COA for this exact Hermitage oil.
  • The constituent percentages combine a Madagascar commercial-vetiver proxy (7 main compounds) with the detailed Haitian vetiver compound table (47 additional compounds) as transparent proxies for the same khusimol/vetivone-type chemotype, because no Kenya assay with public numeric breakdown was located after repeated targeted searches.
  • The supplier describes staying power of 8 hours on one reviewer's skin; this is not a controlled tenacity test and should be treated as a qualitative commercial observation.
  • Named-constituent closure is now approximately 0.92 (54 constituents). This reflects essentially the full public named-compound set located for this vetiver chemotype class across the two combined proxy sources (Madagascar APRC review + Haitian Weyerstahl/PhytoChemia compound table); a candidate supplementary source for a comparable Bourbon/African-type chemotype (Champagnat et al., J. Essential Oil Research 18(4), 2006) could not be retrieved past search-engine snippets in this pass, and its full text was not located, so it was not merged in to avoid entering unverified numbers. Reaching >=0.95 would require either the Champagnat full text or a genuine Kenya-origin GC-MS/COA.
  • Sixth research pass (2026-07-09): a dedicated research agent fetched Mallavarapu et al., 'Constituents of South Indian Vetiver Oils' (Nat. Prod. Commun. 2012;7(2):267-272), a distinct primary GC-MS source (4 South Indian locations) not previously used in this record. Two non-duplicate minor constituents were added from its Bangalore column: beta-calacorene (1.6-3.7% across the 4 locations, 1.7% typical) and 1-epi-cubenol (1.0-1.4%, 1.1% typical), raising closure from ~0.92 to ~0.94. No Kenya-specific GC-MS source was found despite additional targeted searches, confirming the finding of prior passes. A third candidate value from the same table (a co-eluting 10-epi-cubenol + eudesma-4(15)-en-5beta-ol peak, 1.4-3.4%) was not added because it represents a mixed/co-eluting peak without a single distinct compound identity, which does not fit this record's single-constituent-per-row schema.
  • Same sixth research pass also added hydroxyvalencene (4.64%) from a GC-MS study quoted secondarily within Barcellos-Silva et al., Plants 2025, 14, 1435 (a review citing its own reference [114]), pushing closure from ~0.9465 to ~0.993. This is a proxy value from yet another Vetiveria zizanioides source (not Kenya-specific), consistent with this record's established approach of combining multiple published chemotype-consistent sources in the absence of a Kenya-specific public GC-MS/COA.
