A cited maximum is a limit, not a suggested dilution. Missing restrictions do not establish safety.
No furocoumarin-related phototoxic restriction was identified in the public sources reviewed for garlic essential oil.
Contraindications & cautions
- majorPublic safety summaries state that garlic essential oil inhibits blood clotting and should be avoided with anticoagulant medication, major surgery, hemophilia, and other bleeding disorders.
- majorGarlic essential oil should not be applied undiluted to skin because it is strongly irritating and has a very low published dermal limit in leave-on products.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SCENT
Inside the oil
An oil's character comes from its natural chemical composition. Explore each constituent to understand the connections.
About this composition
This China-origin record follows the 2014 comparative GC-MS study of Bangladeshi and China garlic oils. The China sample is dominated by allyl methyl trisulfide, diallyl trisulfide, and diallyl disulfide, with additional sulfur heterocycles and allyl sulfides. Likely analytical artifacts reported in the paper, such as trimethylsilyldiazomethane, were excluded from the constituent list instead of being treated as native garlic volatiles.

A TRADITION OF BOTANICAL CURIOSITY
Traditional & reported uses
These uses reflect the profile's reported traditions and literature. They are not established treatment recommendations.
- traditionally associated with folk wellness practices across many cultures, largely as a culinary/flavor material rather than a fragrance oil
- reported to be used historically in topical folk preparations for general wellness (not medically endorsed)
- used in flavor and aroma chemistry for its pungent, sulfurous character
- traditionally linked to protective or ritual use in some folk traditions
- used sparingly and heavily diluted in niche 'gourmand' or novelty perfumery projects
For aromatherapy and wellness use only — not medical advice. Effect statements are traditional/reported associations, not treatment claims. The Synergy Rating scores blend craft, harmony and safety, not medical efficacy. Read the safety framework.
What we're still learning · 2 data gaps
Good decisions start with knowing what is — and isn't — in the evidence.
- CAS for the article's listed '1,2,4,6-Tetrathiepane' peak was not confidently resolved from a public primary chemistry source in this pass, so the CAS field remains null.
- No public source reviewed in this pass provided verified volatility-rate or tenacity-hour values.
